If you’ve ever wondered how you can reduce your heating costs without sitting in the cold all the time, you should definitely read on.

It can be unpleasant outside in winter – so it’s all the nicer when you come back to a warm living room afterwards. To prevent your heating costs from exploding, as little heat as possible should escape. Here’s how it can work:.

Curtains and blinds keep the heat inside
Of course, the most important thing is that you have well-insulated windows. If this is not the case, you should consider replacing them sooner rather than later or speak with your landlord about it. But, of course, this won’t happen overnight.

That’s why roller blinds on the windows and curtains in front of the windows are a good immediate solution. They cannot replace good insulation. But they do help to keep the heat in the room and most of the cold out.

You need to pay attention to this for the most positive effect

When buying roller blinds and/or curtains, make sure they are either made of polyester or a similarly well-insulating (synthetic) material similar to functional clothing – or that they have an aluminium layer.

In addition, roller blinds should be wider than the window pane and attached to the frame. And curtains should be wider than the window area and floor length; they may also be slightly longer and cover the floor.

When fitting the curtains, however, make sure that no radiators are covered; otherwise, they will only heat the small space between the curtain and the window instead of your room. And thus do precisely the opposite of what they are actually intended for.

The savings that roller blinds and curtains bring
According to the Federal Environment Agency, proper roller blinds can prevent up to 20 percent of heat loss through windows. Even if you do not have or cannot have roller blinds, you should consider curtains and roller blinds. Curtains and proper ventilation in winter can save up to 5% of energy. And the more options you use, the more your heating costs will fall.

By the way, you can even save up to 12 percent of your heating costs with carpets or even a carpeted floor. Small electric heaters can also be used; however, keep an eye on your electricity consumption.
